Send Me Your Coordinates: you don't have to become someone else to succeed

Gabrielle Blackwell on starting sales with negative 437 euros, the family standard she still measures herself against, and the faith that finally took the number off her shoulders.

Gabrielle started in sales at 24, fresh off a divorce, on an air mattress in her uncle's basement, negative 437 euros to her name. She built from there into leading sales development teams at some of tech's best known brands, and the whole career sits on one refusal: she would not earn her worth by overcompensating for it. Strip the quota, the title, and the business, and she is a regular person here to serve more than be served.

The family stories are the spine of the episode. Her grandfather went from driving a cab to becoming one of IBM's most senior Black professionals in sales. Her grandmother grew up in Jim Crow Louisville and set the standard the whole family still measures itself against. Gabrielle inherited that drive, and she is honest that hyper independence has a bill. The refusal to ever rely on anyone started costing her the relationships she was working for.

What took the number off her shoulders was faith, and she says it plainly: "I love the Lord, the Lord loves me." She will not stay anywhere that costs her mental health. You can't pay her enough money.

“I love the Lord, the Lord loves me.”
